Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is full of history and sights like this of new and old colliding are common

Ah, Europe! We just finished our trip over to Sofia, Bulgaria from Buenos Aires. Talk about a long trip! Between our connections and our layovers we were flying for almost 2 days. It was a long time spent eating airport and airplane food. We are both feeling a little bloated and weighed down. We tried to eat healthy during our time spent in the airports (thank goodness for Subway and their veggie heavy sandwiches) but it was very difficult, airplane food is neither delicious nor nutritious.

When we landed here in Sofia we were ready for some more veggies in our lifes! Fortunately, it is summer here and we have had an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from, not only in restaurants but also at the large fruit and vegetable markets that we have seen.

There are cups of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries available for less than $1, which make for delicious snacks, and paired very nicely with a wheat roll and a bit of light cheese as we sat in the grass in one of Sofia’s many parks to have a snack and watch the world go by.

The restaurants offer lots of delicious, veggie laden dishes as well. It is a very nice change. Buenos Aires had tons of great beef, wine, pizza and empanadas but the restaurants served a lot of heavy foods and very few vegetables. The food in Sofi has blown us away, it is so god. We had a dish of potatoes, corn and broccoli baked with cheese on top the first night that was incredible. We had a Dobruzha Salad with grilled zucchini, marinted with olive oil and garlic, lettuce, red beans, corn, thinly sliced red pepper and a light dusting of cheese. I wish I had taken a picture, but we were half way through scarfing it down and exclaiming about how wonderful it was before it even occurred to me. Nick claimed it was one of the best salads he had ever had and we will definitely be trying to replicate as soon as we are in a place with a kitchen again (right now we are stuck with only a fridge). We found a small cafe called the Apartment with really awesome house made juices. There are no servers, you have to go find the kitchen to order but they had some amazing house made juices including a hibiscus mint, parsley ginger and grapefruit orange all sweetened with honey. The food that we have had here has been absolutely incredible and we are so excited that we have more vegetable heavy dishes here!
