My Delicious 2 Weeks (so far!) in Thailand

Ko Lanta, ThailandWe arrived in Thailand! We flew from Portugal to Valencia, Spain for  a few days then flew from the mild weather of Spain and Portugal into the windy, snowy winter of Sofia, Bulgaria. After a few days there we left for Dubai (a very pleasant 80ish degrees) for a day, then to Mumbai for an overnight in the airport there. From Mumbai we flew to Singapore and then finally, FINALLY, we made it to Krabi Thailand where it is hot, mid-nineties hot! It was an exhausting couple of days. I am a terrible, nervous flyer and that was a lot of flying. However, we made it, safe and sound and are enjoying our new beachside way of life.

Krabi is several miles from the ocean on a large river and is actually known as a foodie sort of town. We enjoyed tons of Pad Thai which is unbelievably cheap, both of us could get a good sized portion for just over $2- it’s a beautiful thing!

We ate curries and stir-fries and cooled off with fruit shakes- fruit, ice and coconut water all blended together!

We attended the Krabi Walking Street fair and picked up some tasty grilled chicken and sugar palm cakes (steamed cakes that are not nearly as sweet as they sound and oh so tasty!).

We also found a booth advertising “fried ice cream” but it turned out to be made-to-order ice cream- so cool to watch! (We split an Oreo ice cream).

We enjoyed some nice, spicy food as well. While we have enjoyed the foods of Europe we both miss spicy foods immensely! When my sister came to visit she brought a can of jalapenos, which helped but the food in Thailand is satisfying our need for spicy!

From Krabi we traveled by boat to Koh Lanta a large island about 2 hours by boat from Krabi. We ate all kinds of wonderful things from stir fried tofu with smashed garlic and ginger to one of my new favorites- spicy papaya salad!

We even attended cooking class at Roi Thai. Read about it HERE. We continued our morning yogurt and muesli routine for the probiotics and the fiber and tried to get as much fruit as possible which is how we found this amazing thing- the dragon fruit.

A fruit neither of us had seen before. We had heard it described as “a cross between a pear and a kiwi” and we thought “hmm, how would that even taste?” but here is the thing- that is exactly what it tasted like… although I admit, it is still a weird combination of flavors, but very good!

From Koh Lanta we ventured to Koh Phayam, a much smaller, much less touristy island. We found wild cashews growing there which is a wild thing if you have never seen where cashews come from.

We also tried our first young coconut. The coconut water was cold and refreshing and the coconut meat was a very tasty, healthy snack on a very hot day!

We also had tons of fresh cut fruit- watermelon, pineapple and mango- which hits the spot like nothing else when it is as hot as it is here (sorry for those of you buried under snow!). I had a great spicy fruit salad with tomatoes, watermelon, dragon fruit, carrots and pineapple all tossed in a spicy, salty sauce which made for an awesome combo.

We even found a lady who baked bread- from cinnamon rolls to focaccia and baguettes in her outdoor bakery on the island and got some wonderful breads.

It has been a delicious and nice and spicy few weeks here in Thailand. We head to Bangkok next- I can’t wait to try the food there!
