Unfortunately, when we get to expensive countries like Norway and Finland, we seem to resort to the cheapest food we can find, which is usually pizza. Helsinki is no exception. I am missing healthy, balanced meals more and more each day. We split a pizza the first night and while it was still pizza, it was at least a novel pizza- deer, salami and pineapple all on a cracker thin crust. The deer was a little gamey, but went really well with the salty salami and the sweet pineapple. It was actually quite tasty!

Our trip to Helsinki was tons of fun, but the timing was a little off, we arrived too early for the Christmas Market and the only full day we spent there was Finland’s Independence day and most businesses were closed. We had a hard time finding meals that day. Our breakfast was yogurt, dried fruit and granola from the grocery store. We emptied out the mini bar to make room for the yogurt and some milk in the teeny tiny fridge in our room. We finally found an open middle eastern restaurant and I was so excited to get a few veggies in my life and opted for the vegetarian plate- hummus, falafel, roasted eggplant, peppers & zucchini, dolmas and tabouleh- oh, it was wonderful! Dinner was an interesting twist on the banh mi from the deli section of a grocery store. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza who, to my great satisfaction, provided a bowl full of apples at reception- guess what we snacked on every day 🙂
