Berlin had an amazing amount of food choices- it is such an international city! And we were lucky enough to be there during the Christmas Markets. There was so much good stuff to choose from. We tried to stick to sensible breakfasts: fruit, hard boiled eggs, toast and the tomatoes and cucumbers that the breakfast buffet in our hotel featured. A good hearty breakfast meant that we were less likely to end up starving in a few hours, it also meant that we had a good foundation for the day- fruits, veggies, protein and the occasional whole wheat slice of toast or cereal.

We were only there for a few days, and would have loved to spent more time exploring Berlin. We ate bratwurst slathered in a delicious mustard and big, soft pretzels at the Christmas markets. We drank glühwein, the delicious mulled wine flavored with oranges, apples and cinnamon, sometimes fortified with a shot of amaretto or rum, it was super sweet, but very warming on the bitterly cold day. We went to dinner with a wonderful friend from Argentina and enjoyed house made meatballs and sausage with sauerkraut (a bit heavy and definitely not a lot of vegetables- that’s where the healthy, balanced breakfast comes in!) I didn’t eat all of my dinner, it was just too heavy.

We also enjoyed trying the middle eastern food of Berlin. We were surprised to learn that the döners we love so, so very much are actually from Berlin. We tried a few different döners while we where in Berlin. One, from Mustafas Gemüse Kebap, was arguably the best I have ever had. It had 3 different and delicious sauces, then the döner meat, a layer of cooked veggies ranging from zucchini to potatoes, a layer of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and herbs like mint and dill and was topped with feta and a squeeze of lemon juice. Epic.

Nick also tried the infamous curry wurst, a sausage covered in curry flavored ketchup… An interesting taste combination!
I wish that we had more time in Berlin to get to explore more of the city, it was an absolutely incredible and delicious place!
